Fancy-colour diamonds, explained

Yellow, pink, blue, green and champagne: how coloured diamonds are graded and how to choose one.

Fancy-colour diamonds, explained

Most diamonds are prized for having as little colour as possible. A fancy-colour diamond is the opposite: its colour is the point. It can be yellow, pink, blue, green, champagne and more.

A different scale

White diamonds are graded from D down the alphabet. Fancy colours are graded on their own scale, by the strength of the colour, from faint and light through fancy and fancy intense to the deepest shades. The stronger and more even the colour, the more the stone is usually worth.

Choosing a colour

  • Yellow: warm and sunny, and the most widely available fancy colour.
  • Pink: soft and romantic, one of the rarest colours in nature.
  • Blue: cool and calm, lovely in white gold or platinum.
  • Green: fresh and unusual.
  • Champagne: a warm golden brown that glows in yellow and rose gold.

Shape and setting

Shapes with many facets, such as radiant and cushion, tend to show colour most strongly. Yellow gold deepens a yellow stone; white metals keep a blue or pink stone cool and clear.
